Mary Richardson

Mary was living in Nashville, TN when she was introduced to yoga in 2000. She became enamored by the Ashtanga yoga tradition, and a year later made her first trip to India to immerse herself in the practice. Since then, she has been exposed to and influenced by various traditions and teachers. She is endlessly grateful to her first teacher, V.K. Sheshadre, and the others that have enriched her life with their teachings.

After arriving in Austin, she received teacher training with the Living Yoga Program. Incorporating Mary's various influences, her classes consist of an eclectic arrangement of continuous poses that reflect her commitment to remaining awake, balanced and open in one's own practice.

Festival Presentation: Introduction to Breathing in Asana

As we begin to practice yoga, our natural tendency is to hold the breath or use stress induced breathing while holding a posture. This creates tension and stress within causing you to drain prana (energy), which is counter intuitive to the purpose of hatha yoga. There are several ways to breathe in asanas that help to relax, release tension and build energy. We will explore the foundation of breathing while practicing yoga, and how it effects the body and mind.
